A team from the European Commission are planning to inspect meat processing plants in Bulgaria in spring 2003, according to the executive director of the Association of Meat Processing Companies in Bulgaria.
Commission experts will attempt to determine whether Bulgarian meat companies adhere to EU hygiene and veterinary standards and whether they should be given licences to export to other EU countries.
A further inspection is to take place in the autumn. Plants which have not shown any progress towards reaching EU standards will be closed down, but those plants which have started restructuring plans will be given time to implement them, reported the Bulgarian news Digest.
