In its latest attempt to justify the infamous seal hunt in Canada, the country’s fisheries and oceans minister Geoff Regan has claimed his government would not ban annual slaughter of the furry innocents because seal meat is good for you.

The practice, abhorred by activists, particularly Greenpeace, has historically been a hard sell for the Canadians. But during a recent meeting with writers from the Ottawa Citizen, Regan said his department is seeking to expand the seal meat industry because of its health benefits.

“Seal oil is great in terms of omega-3 acids,” he said. Omega-3 oils protect against heart disease.
