Canadians do not trust biotech food, despite having eating it for years with no apparent adverse health effects, according to a Health Canada (the federal health ministry) survey by pollsters Pollara.
Roughly 90% of respondents said they were concerned about the long-term risks of GM food products while 92% indicated some level of concern with the long-term risks these products might cause for human health.
Despite the surveys findings, Health Canada has not received a single report of harm from more than 40 GM products approved in recent years, including canola, corn, rice, sunflowers and soybeans. Respondents’ primary health concern was that proteins created by genetic modification could cause allergic reactions.
