University students in Canada have invented edible packaging made from soy, flour and glycerin.
Three engineering students from Guelph University, Ontario, won first prize for creating the substance in an annual competition to encourage new products and marketing techniques for soyabeans, the latest cash crop in the province.
The students have already been approached to market their new invention but as yet there are no plans for it to be sold to the public. Other soy-based inventions in the contest were a soy-based balm for livestock which reduces the spread of mastitis and udder infections, soy milk for cats, soy-based iron supplement, soy fudge and soy paper.
