US officials are to re-inspect Tyson Foods’ plant in Alberta, Canada to determine whether it will be permitted to resume beef exports to the US.

Exports to the US from the Lakeside Packers plant in Brooks, Alberta were stopped last week due to food safety concerns. The plant is capable of slaughtering one million head of cattle annually, with almost half of its production destined for the US.

Last month there were three reports of the E.coli bacteria being found in US hamburgers that had an indirect link to Lakeside Packers. The beef in the burgers originated at the plant but had since been further processed in smaller US factories, reported Reuters.
