In a deal to be made public later this year, US retail giant Wal-Mart has purchased the Puerto Rican supermarket chain Amigo.

The El Nuevo Dia newspaper reported the deal at between US$250m and US$300m.  Amigo predicted that during 2002, they would open four new stores and remodel seven others at an investment of US$20m. The company currently employs more than 4,000 people and saw sales increase 18% during the last few months of 2001.
