Per capita ice cream consumption has tripled in Chile oer the last 20 years, to reach 5.9 litres from 1.7 litres recorded in 1970.

According to local newspaper El Mercurio, sales growth has been driven by savvy marketing and increased competition between ice cream producers. Häagen Dazs, it notes, sells products both in supermarkets and video rental shops in Santiago. Coppelia meanwhile significantly improved its distribution channels and Lecherias Loncomilla employs aggressive marketing techniques.
