Empresas Carozzi has entered an agreement to acquire Lecherías Loncomilla, the owner of the San Francisco ice-cream brand in Chile.

Founded in 1975 by the Mac Clure Lyon family, Lecherías Loncomilla also manufactures frozen desserts, with its products supplied to the retail channel in Chile. Financial terms for the deal, which is subject to local competition approval, were not disclosed in a stock-exchange filing last week.

Carozzi entered the ice-cream category in 2020 when the company struck a deal to acquire the local brands Bresler and Melevi from Unilever. That deal also included a license for the marketing of Unilever’s global brands – Magnum, Calippo, Fruttare, Carte D’or, Vienetta and Cornetto.

According to Carozzi’s 2021 annual report, the company is the fourth-largest ice-cream maker in the South American country. The company also produces foods including pasta, cereals, biscuits, confectionery and cooking oils. Its brands include Vivo, Ambrofoli and Molitalia.

The company, founded in 1898, supplies pet food under the Master Dog name. Outside of Chile, export markets include Argentina and Peru.

In 2021, Carozzi posted sales of US$1.3bn and EBITDA of $180m.
