Gruma SA, the Mexican corn flour and tortilla company, has revealed that it has opened its first production facility in China.


The plant will initially manufacture goods for the Chinese market and will expand to manufacture tortillas for the rest of Asia, the company said in a statement. Gruma already has distribution facilities located in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Taiwan.


The factory, located in Shanghai, is the company’s first production site in Asia and the 89th internationally. It has the capacity to produce 15,000 metric tonnes of wheat-flour tortillas each year, 7,000 metric tonnes of corn-flour tortillas and 6,000 metric tonnes of corn chips each year.
