A fire at a poultry processing plant in China has killed “at least” 112 people, reports claim.

The fire broke out at a slaughterhouse in Dehui in Jilin province, at around 6am (CST) this morning (3 June). The cause of the fire is as yet unclear: some reports have linked the blaze to a faulty electrical system while others have pointed to an ammonia leak.

Xinhua, the state-run news agency, has reported the fire has now been put out and rescue workers are recovering the bodies of the 112 people who were believed to be trapped in the building. Around 100 workers escaped the facility.

The news agency said the front gates of the factory were locked when the blaze began and rescue work was hampered by the complex building layout and narrow exit paths.
