Danish ingredients manufacturer Danisco is confident it will soon gain approval from the European Union to market a low-calorie fat it already sells in the US under the Benefat brand.
Danisco said the EU’s Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health has given a positive opinion on the low-calorie fat, which is supposed to have a calorie value one-third that of ordinary fat, reports Dow Jones.
Danisco is ready to launch Benefat in Europe within a few months, pending approval from the EU. It has been available in the US since the mid 1990s.
“We expect annual sales of between €7-14m (US$8.04-16.07m) after an introduction period of two to four years. This corresponds to approximately 0.1% of the market for chocolate and cakes,” Torben Svejgaard, president of Danisco’s emulsifiers unit, said in a written statement.
