A European Union research project will establish common rules measuring damage caused to consumers by food-borne illnesses, to iron out inconsistencies in assessments between EU countries.

Part of the EU’s Med-Vet-Net initiative, scientists will focus on two common infections: salmonella and campylobacter. They will screen existing hospital blood samples for both pathogens, note how many had contamination levels that should spark disease, and compare these figures with actual reported cases, highlighting anomalies in statistics.
