Plans to approve ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose as a permitted food additive in the EU have been scrapped by the European Commission, which has backed concerns voiced by the European Parliament about the substance, because of the impurities that it might contain. EU ministers will instead be asked to back expanding an expanded approved additive list, to include propane, butane and iso-butane.
