The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has called for a reassessment of statistical models that are used to fix pesticide residue levels for fruit and vegetables.

The European Union (EU) agency says that “conservative assumptions” are used regarding portion sizes and average concentrations, and the risk of significant residue concentrations, saying these may “warrant further consideration”.

Meanwhile, EFSA has recommended that two lines of genetically modified maize are safe enough for human consumers, animals and the environment to secure market approval. 1507 maize would be bad news for some butterflies and moths, however, being designed to kill certain “pest” species.
