The European Commission is trying to persuade the European Union (EU) Council of Ministers to slap an import ban on poultry, poultry meat and eggs imports from California.
California is suffering an outbreak of Newcastle Disease in chickens. The EC would like to continue accepting these products from other parts of the United States.
Within the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, German, French and Spanish representatives have yet to support the idea and Austria is opposed, saying that it considers “guarantees given by the US authorities to be insufficient from a technical point of view”.
The ban would also cover wild and farmed feathered game products.
