The EU has launched a research project aimed at harmonising European methods analysing food for safety and quality.
The project is called MONIQA (Monitoring and Quality Assurance in the food supply chain) and cost some EUR12m (US$16.3m).
Researchers will create a virtual laboratory examining food safety issues and various food testing and analysis methods used across Europe, investigating the implications of new processing technologies.
The participants then hope to develop systems “acceptable to consumers, manufacturers and regulatory bodies”.
