The European Commission has requested eight EU member countries to trace contaminated meat, which may have been imported from Germany.

This follows the suicide of a Munich meat wholesaler after his business had been raided by police who found more than 60 tonnes of rotting meat awaiting delivery to purchasers in Germany and other EU countries.

The merchant is alleged to have had faked “sell by” dates up to four years beyond expiry, to have refrozen defrosted meat and to have exported 90 tonnes of rotten food. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged provincial governments to observe common food safety structures and engage in better information exchanges.
