The US ambassador to the EU has said that the US hopes that Greece will resolve the biotechnology issue during its coming presidency of the EU.
“We don’t know if it’s on the Greek agenda, but we are confident that Greece will move the issue forward as we await certain approvals,” Rockwell Schnabel is reported as saying by Dow Jones International.
“Genetically modified products are good for the consumer, the environment and for those people in the world living in poverty,” Schnabel added.
Schnabel was in Athens to meet with Greek authorities for discussions concerning Greece’s EU presidency objectives.
The US wants an end to the EU moratorium on GM foods. Greece is one of the six EU member states currently refusing to lift the moratorium.
