The EU’s social affairs commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou has urged EU member states to rapidly adopt a EU rule granting workers the right to be informed and consulted ahead of any decision affecting their work.

“Within one week, we have heard about abrupt lay-offs of over 6,000 people at two companies (Marks & Spencer and Groupe Danone). We cannot remain numb in front of such decisions and on the certain effects it will have on the concerned workers and their families,” she said.

The commission said workers should not learn about their lay-offs from the press or just a few minutes before the public announcement.
