A plenary session of the European Parliament has piled additional political pressure on European Union (EU) ministers and the European Commission to improve farmed chicken welfare.

MEPs Tuesday (14 February) backed the stance of the parliament’s agriculture committee in calling for additional welfare rules for chicken producers. They suggested a deadline of 1 January 2013 for ending a derogation allowing stocking densities to rise from a standard minimum of 30 kg/m2 per unit to 38 kg/m2 where certain additional welfare standards are met.
