The European Union (EU) has launched the initial stage of disputes proceedings at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against Mexico over its imposition of anti-subsidy countervailing duties on EU exports of olive oil.

Brussels claims the tariffs establishment broke world trade rules in 11 ways, notably that Mexico launched an investigation leading the duties’ imposition, without “sufficient evidence that (its) domestic industry is suffering injury as a result of subsidised imports.”

It also claims the Mexican government failed to establish whether the subsidy allegations it acted upon came from Mexico olive oil producers. Mexico City “should have been satisfied that there was insufficient evidence” to proceed, said Brussels.
