European Union (EU) agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler has warned an organic farming conference that no food can now be completely free of genetically modified organisms.

As a result, he said that a moral absolutist stance in setting acceptable thresholds for the levels of GMOs in organic and conventional products is unrealistic. Instead, realistic advice from politicians should be taken.

“We have been banished from paradise. The idea of a zero per cent threshold was no doubt possible in the Garden of Eden, but not in the real world,” said Dr Fischler.
That said, the Commissioner said Brussels would produce an organic food promotion action plan within three months.
