As the French government prepares to resist cuts to its beloved European Union (EU) agricultural subsidies in the EU’s 2007-13 medium-term budget, aid agency Oxfam has released figures showing that the top 15% French agro-companies trouser 60% of EU farm cash.

Said Oxfam’s Celine Charveriat: “This gives a lie to the French argument that it uses EU subsidies to support its small farmers. They plainly don’t. Most small French farmers – 70% of them – get only 17% of the subsidies doled out by Paris.”

France is the biggest net gainer of Brussels’ agricultural funding, commanding more than 20% of the CAP budget.
