The European Commission has ordered that two additional traditional food products should be added to the European Union’s (EU) register of protected geographical indications.
They are Périgord strawberries, from southwest France, and the Spanish blue cheese, Queso de Valdéon, from León.
The two products join around 600 products already listed on the register that cannot be marketed in the EU, unless they are made in their traditional home region and are also produced according to local established methods.
“When a product acquires a reputation that crosses frontiers, it can be confronted in the market by imitation products that usurps its name,” added Brussels.
