The European Commission has launched a €1.01m (US$1.3m) research project to develop guidelines on producing food for elderly people, which is tailored to improve their health and well-being.

Researchers in the NUTRI-SENEX scheme will consider tackling the loss of smell and taste of older consumers, which sparks a loss of appetite, leading to weight loss and other health problems.

The project may make suggestions on the production of flavour and nutrient-enhanced foods, specially designed for the elderly. Another problem to be considered is lack of diversity regarding foods in nursing homes, where residents are often being offered no choice in communal meals, regardless of their cultural and personal preferences.
