The European Commission has agreed to add “Miel de Granada” (honey from the Spanish region of Granada) and “Olive de Nice” (olives from the French city) to the list of foods that may carry special “appellations d’origine protégées (AOP)” labels attesting to their geographical origin, their status as a traditional speciality or the unique manufacturing processes behind them.
There are now 700 foods on the list which is fiercely protected by the Commission as a means of promoting quality and diversity in food products and to safeguard consumer protection but which is under attack from America and others as a potential trade restriction.
