French consumer rights association UFC-Que Choisir has called for a law forbidding food products rich in sugar and fat to be advertised during children’s TV.

The consumer group has also called for VAT on these products to be raised from 5.5% to the maximum rate of 19.6% in order to encourage consumers to turn to healthier foods.

The group said too little progress has been made in promoting good nutrition during children’s viewing times. The association pointed to a study revealing that 87% of ads broadcast during these periods in 2007 have focused on selling very sweet and greasy foods compared to 89% the previous year.
