The main labour union at Nestlé France, the CGT has called for a national day of action to be staged today (14 November), including work stoppages at all of the company’s plants in France.

The union is protesting at restructuring plans, the relocation of jobs and threats to employee rights as well as demanding wage increases. The day of action will coincide with a meeting of Nestlé France’s works council set for today also.

“A single day of action is unlikely to have an impact on production at our French plants and if there was disruption we could compensate through existing stocks or by adapting output at plants outside of France,” a company spokesman told just-food.

He added that the union’s call has been timed to apply pressure ahead of the works council meeting which will consider proposals on the future of the group’s activities in France, details of which he did not disclose.

Nestlé France’s management will not have forgotten that the CGT union led a bitter 18 month-long protest over the restructuring of the Nestlé Waters’ Perrier brand.
