Mann Packing, a US vegetable and fruit business acquired by Fresh Del Monte Produce almost three years ago, has opened a new facility in California.

The 130,000 square-foot site in the city of Gonzales will supply fresh vegetables and fruit, coleslaw and Mann’s range of Nourish Bowl salads, and becomes the company’s fifth production plant. The other factories are located in Salinas, Chualar and Delhi, all in California, along with a facility in Yuma, Arizona.

In light of current social-distancing measures linked to Covid-19, the Gonzales plant has “state-of-the-art sanitation and cleaning protocols” and separate processing and raw material areas.

Parker Javid, Mann’s vice president for sales, said in a statement: “With the opening of this safe and innovative facility we are so excited to continue to share with our consumers both new and existing products and continue to build a bright future together with them. Our commitment to our customers and consumers is to supply the freshest produce with optimum standards of food safety.”

No details of the investment in the new plant were provided but just-food has approached the company for more insight.

Fresh Del Monte Produce is an independent supplier of fruit and vegetables headquartered in Florida and markets its products in North America under the Del Monte brand, but also other brands under license from the separate and distinctive company Del Monte Foods.

It acquired Mann Packing in 2018 for a price tag of US$361m.
