Some free-range eggs in several German states have been found to contain high levels of the cancer causing chemical dioxin.

The eggs are believed to contain dioxin because hens were allowed to wander on land contaminated with the chemical. In response, German Agriculture Minister Renate Kuenast has called for better controls on free-range eggs, reported BBC News Online.
“We must have a firmer environmental policy,” she was quoted as saying. “We need to ensure that dioxin levels are reduced and that it vanishes from our environment.”
Thomas Isenberg of the National Association of Consumer Advice Centres called for the contaminated eggs to be removed from supermarket shelves. However, he stressed that there was no need for consumers to panic.
“Keep on eating your eggs for breakfast, there is no acute danger to health,” he was quoted by Expatica as saying.
