Delegates of German grocery trade association BVL (Bundesverband des Lebensmittelhandels) have elected Jan Freuen as its new president.

Freuen, aged just 34, is the first of a new wave of younger managers, a move initiated by outgoing president Herbert Blank. Freuen is an employee of Edeka, the retail giant, and is just the latest generation in a family with strong roots in the retail sector.

Supermarkets operated by the Freuen family operation have received numerous awards from trade publications.
