German retailers sold €3.0bn (US$3.17bn) worth of organic food in 2002, representing a year-on-year increase of 0.5%.

According to the Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren (German Natural Food Association), this corresponds to 2.7% of total food sales in Germany. Growth has slowed considerably since the year before, a state of affairs attributed largely to the overall slowdown of the German economy, growth in unemployment and global political factors, the BNN said.

It is likely that the nitrofen scandal also turned some consumers off organic poultry.
