Sales of organic food in Germany reached €3.0bn in 2002.

During the year, German federal authorities introduced the Bio-Siegel label that certifies German organic products.

The country’s minister of agriculture and consumer products has said that around €36m has been allocated in 2003 for a programme aimed at providing information about organic foods to farmers, manufacturers, retailers and consumers. The programme is expected to lead to an increase in sales of organic products in Germany, reported the German News Digest.
