Cissell was previously vice president and chief operating officer of Wal-Mart China. Gray was vice president of Wal-Mart China’s hypermarket operations.

The spokesperson refused to be drawn on when the executive would join the company and declined to comment further.

Reports in the local press also said that Gwyn Sundhagul, Reliance’s current CEO, will move into a new role within the wider Reliance Industries conglomerate.

The exits of Cissell and Gray were part of a spate of executive departures from Wal-Mart’s Asian operations in recent months. The company’s CFO Roland Lawrence also recently left the company’s Chinese unit, while the CEO of the retailer’s Japanese arm, Toru Norda, also left the company.
