In a bid to tap into the US$13bn global organic food and beverage (OFB) market, the Indian government has launched a National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP).
The programme is designed to realise the potential within Indian agriculture for organic production methods, link food producers with export markets and ensure the manufacture of a product that attracts a premium price.
India already has a strong tradition in organic farming, but the NPOP hopes to maximise the advantages of this tradition by further reducing chemical input quotas and establish standards for OFB production.
