The Indian government is reportedly preparing a challenge to the World Trade Organisation order that requires it to lift restrictions on poultry imports from the US.

According to a report in The Economic Times, an official source said it was important to protect the livelihoods of small farmers in the country in a “WTO-compliant way”. The unnamed source told the paper the Indian government plans to lodge an appeal and noted the process could take as long as two years.

India imposed import restrictions on US poultry in 2007 over concerns of the spread of bird flu. In October, the WTO ruled the curbs were not justified.

A spokesperson for India’s Ministry of Commerce declined to comment.
