Indonesia’s wheat flour imports almost tripled in 2002 to 712,723 tonnes from 256,000 tonnes in 2001, due to higher shipments mainly from India, according to the Association of Indonesian Flour Mills (Aptindo).

“Local flour mills are struggling to compete with surging flour imports,” Aptindo director Ratna Sari Loppies told Reuters, adding that China had also been a major supplier.

Aptindo’s forecast for wheat imports in 2002 had been 332,000 tonnes.
