Irish food authorities are failing to test for residues of pesticides and other chemicals in food, according to the European Commission.

EU officials are also concerned about the use of the banned cancer-causing chemical malachite green in Irish fish farms, reported the Irish Independent.

“Residue controls in the aquaculture sector demonstrate a number of significant shortcomings,” the newspaper quoted a recent report by the EU’s directorate of health as saying.

An inspection last year also discovered shortcomings with the testing of fruit and vegetables for pesticide residues. The inspection revealed that less than 20% of available pesticides were tested for.
