In what is being hailed as landmark verdict aimed at stemming the compensation culture, a Superquinn employee has lost a personal injury claim against the Irish supermarket company and been ordered to pay an estimated €20,000 (US$25,400) in legal costs.

The supermarket employee, Paul Walsh, claimed he suffered a “wrenching injury” while manoeuvring a row of shopping trolleys, having swerved to avoid a child.

The judge commented that children should be expected in a shopping centre and employees had to take some personal responsibility for their actions.
