Ireland has been given the green light by the US to export beef to the country, the first EU member to win approval since Washington imposed a ban over BSE 15 years ago.

The US lifted the embargo in March and Ireland has been given the go-ahead to resume shipments following inspections by US officials in July.

The Irish authorities will now look to clear individual plants based on “agreed criteria” with the US.

“This US market is a huge prize given the size of the market and the demand we know exists there for premium grass-fed beef,” Irish Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney said. “We now have first-mover advantage as a result of being the first EU member state to gain entry.”
