The European Union has selected Parma, Italy as the site for its Food Safety Authority (EFSA) headquarters.

With an annual budget of €40m (US$49.7m), the facility, scheduled to be fully operative within three years, will employ more than 300 staff.

A primary function of the EFSA is to assess risk related to the food chain and identify potential threats to the European food supply. The authority aims to provide independent scientific and technical guidance on food safety issues and communicate important information to the general public.
