Chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut has confirmed that it will increase capacity at its cocoa plants in the Ivory Coast.

The company said it is expanding its existing cocoa processing facility in San Pedro by 70,000 metric tons, bringing the overall capacity at the site to approximately 170,000 metric tons a year in the region. The facility is expected to be operational in spring 2012.

Barry Callebaut has a second plant in Abidjan and the investment at San Pedro will take the combined capacity at the two facilities to 210,000 tonnes a year.

Production at its factory in Abidjan and San Pedro will bring the total capacity to 210,000 tons a year.

When contacted by just-food, a spokesperson for the company did not disclose how much money would be spent on the expansion.

Barry Callebaut manufactures chocolate for Hershey, Kraft Foods and Nestle.
