Heavy rainfall in May has wrecked havoc with Jamaica’s agriculture and caused damage worth US$10m to its crops, according to figures compiled by the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service.
May is a traditionally rainy month but the country has seen a deluge of nearly 8 inches in some areas.
Damages were also reported in the banana industry, and poultry producers suffered as the country experienced seven days of torrential downpour. According to the Caribbean Update, some 121,000 mature chickens were believed lost in Clarendon parish, and most of them drowned.
