AEON will open a new type supermarket called “My Basket” in metropolitan residential areas throughout Japan this year. My Basket, which will takes up small retail units similar in size to Tesco’s metro stores, targets the old and the ‘returned-to-central town’ population.
The name comes from Aeon’s success with a shopping bag system that does away with plastic disposable shopping bags and eliminates the need to transfer items from shopping baskets to plastic shopping bags.
Customers purchase a My Basket, which looks like a lighter version of a supermarket basket at the service counter for JPY300 (US$0.03). Goods are then put into to the customer’s basket while shopping and taken away in the same basket.
