As the first nation to approve human consumption of cloned animals and by-product foodstuffs, Japan has reported that at least 300 cattle have reached market since a voluntary ban on the products was lifted nearly a year ago.

Japan’s farm and food ministry recently released figures for the period April 2003-December 2003 and is now compiling figures for 2004. There are no concerns at all about the safety of cloned cattle according to officials at the Animal Production Division of the ministry. Cloned pigs and goats are now in the pipeline. Already 36 cloned swine have been born.

Consumer advocate groups are complaining the public have no way to know what meat is cloned as there is no labelling system for cloned beef.
