A sure sign that Japan’s economy is back on track, Japan noted that a pair of its celebrated Yubari melons fetches record price of JPY800,000 (US$7,031.50) recently.
The Two melons were the first to be sold this season at the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market in Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido.
Spectators put the high price down to the fact that the season was late starting this year owing to an unusually long, harsh winter.
The successful bidder was Ogasawara Shoten, a souvenir shop in Hokkaido’s main airport.
