Wal-Mart has confirmed that its Japanese supermarket chain Seiyu is on the look out for possible mergers and acquisitions next year.

A spokesperson for the US retail giant told just-food that, having completed its latest restructuring package, Wal-Mart feels Seiyu is a better proposition than at anytime since its acquisition of the Japanese chain.

For some time now Wal-Mart has been looking for potential M&A opportunities in Japan. However, Seiyu’s approaches to a number of supermarket chains came to nothing. According to analysts, Japanese retailers were cautious of possible partnerships due to Seiyu’s continued troubles.
