For the 21st consecutive year, August sales at Japanese supermarkets have fallen. On a same-store basis, the Japan Chain Stores Association revealed today (26 September) revealed that sales were down 5.7% on those of 1999, totalling ¥1,336bn for all of Japan’s 7106 stores, themselves controlled by 114 companies. Food sales experienced the less drastic fall however, compared to clothes and household goods, dropping by 3.9%
