Supermarket sales nationwide slid 1.2% year on year for the month of April, according to figures released by the Japan Chain Stores Association.


The drop to ¥1.174 trillion (US$9.4bn), adjusted for changes in the number of stores, represents the 41st consecutive drop in monthly sales.


In January, February and March of this year, sales were down 2.8%, 4.8% and 0.6% year on year, respectively.
