A panel entrusted by the Japanese Government to promote acceptance of GM products has released details of a poll that shows half of the population firmly against GM crops.

The survey carried out by the government affiliated STAFF (The Society for Techno-innovation of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) showed only 9% of those polled had a good image of GM food, while those who viewed GM food as unfavourable counted 51% of interviewees. Respondents who declared themselves to be reluctant to eat GM food tallied 61%.

Seventy percent said they were ignorant of the fact that  oil and soy sauce do not have mandatory GM labeling.
